What should you know about gallstones in the toilet?

Seeing particles or unusual colour in the toilet cannot reliably confirm gallstones, because stones form inside the gallbladder. A gallstone may pass into the bowel, but what you see after a bowel movement could also be food, mucus or another digestive change. Diagnosis depends on symptoms, examination and sometimes imaging rather than visual inspection.

Gallstones can block bile flow. Reduced bile reaching the intestine may make stools look unusually pale or clay-coloured, while urine can become darker and the skin or eyes may turn yellow. These changes need medical attention because they can reflect a blocked duct and are not a way to identify a stone by sight. Greasy stools, diarrhoea and indigestion also have many possible causes.

If you notice repeated pale stools, dark urine, yellowing, upper abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, arrange prompt clinical advice. Describe the colour change, when it began, any meal-related pain, and medicines or supplements you take. A GP may arrange blood tests and an ultrasound. Do not rely on stool straining or home inspection to decide whether treatment is needed.

Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, fever, persistent vomiting, jaundice, confusion, faintness or rapid worsening. A blocked bile duct can become infected, and gallstone-related pancreatitis can cause severe upper abdominal pain that may spread to the back.

Ask what your stool or urine change might indicate, whether liver and pancreas blood tests are needed, and how an ultrasound can assess the gallbladder. Check which symptoms mean you should go straight to urgent care.
