What Should You Know About Mobile C-Arm Fluoroscopy?

A C-arm has an X-ray source and detector joined in a curved frame. Because the frame is mounted on wheels, it can be brought beside an operating or procedure table and moved around the relevant body area. The system displays a sequence of images on a monitor rather than producing only one still image.

The clinician may use these images to locate a spinal level, guide a needle, align a fracture, check an implant, or confirm that bones and joints are in a suitable position before finishing. The imaging supports the procedure; it does not replace the examination, treatment plan, or the clinician’s judgement.

The X-ray beam is used for the time needed to obtain useful views. Staff may use positioning, distance, shielding, and exposure controls to manage radiation. Tell the team before the procedure if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, and mention any previous imaging concerns.

Follow the instructions for food, drink, medicines, and arrival time. These instructions depend on whether you are having local anaesthetic, sedation, or another form of anaesthesia. Wear clothing that allows access to the body area and remove metal items when asked. Do not stop prescribed medicines unless your treating team tells you to.

During imaging, you may need to stay still while the C-arm is repositioned. The machine may come close to you without touching you. Staff who are not needed at the table may step away or use protective barriers. Ask which part of the procedure the imaging will guide and whether you need someone to take you home after sedation.

Mobile C-arm imaging is commonly used with procedures such as an epidural steroid injection, a closed reduction, or fracture fixation surgery.

The imaging itself does not usually determine whether you need urgent help. After the procedure, follow the discharge instructions and contact the treating service for worsening pain, increasing swelling, fever, drainage, or a new rash around an injection or wound. Seek urgent medical care for new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, or a rapidly worsening reaction.

If you are worried about radiation exposure, pregnancy, or a reaction to contrast material or medication, tell the clinical team promptly so they can assess your situation and explain the next step.

Ask what the C-arm will help the team see, whether contrast material is planned, what type of anaesthesia or sedation you will receive, and which symptoms should prompt a call after you go home. You can also ask how pregnancy concerns, medicines, or allergies may change the preparation.
