What does live attenuated virus mean in the MMR vaccine?

Attenuated means weakened. The vaccine viruses are changed so they can stimulate an immune response but do not behave like the viruses that cause measles, mumps, or rubella in everyday infection. The immune system can recognise the vaccine material and prepare memory cells and antibodies. Because this is a live vaccine, timing and medical history matter more for some people, including those with certain immune problems or during pregnancy. It does not give someone measles, mumps, or rubella in the ordinary sense.

Tell the vaccinator about pregnancy, medicines that suppress immunity, serious allergies, recent vaccines, and previous reactions. Bring reliable vaccination records when available. After the dose, mild soreness, tiredness, fever, or a delayed rash may occur; fluids and rest can help. Follow the advice given by the vaccination team and keep the record for future appointments. If vaccination is delayed, ask how protection can be maintained and whether another immunisation schedule is appropriate.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, collapse, or a rapidly spreading allergic rash. Contact a clinician for a persistent high temperature, severe weakness, unusual bleeding, or any infection concern in a person with reduced immunity. During pregnancy, report an inadvertent dose to the maternity or vaccination team for individual advice; do not make changes to medicines without guidance.
