MMR and varicella live vaccines: what to know

A live vaccine uses a weakened form of a virus to train immune memory. MMR protects against measles, mumps, and rubella; varicella vaccination targets the virus that causes chickenpox. The vaccines may be given during the same visit when clinically appropriate. A mild fever or a few spots can occur as the immune response develops and does not automatically mean infection. The vaccine cannot cause measles, mumps, rubella, or typical chickenpox in most people with a healthy immune system.

People with certain immune conditions, those taking immune-suppressing medicines, and people who are pregnant may need a different plan. A clinician should review medical history, previous doses, allergies, and any recent blood products before vaccination.

Bring the vaccination record and a list of medicines to the appointment. Afterward, keep fluids available, choose comfortable clothing, and observe how the person feels. Fever can be managed with advice from a pharmacist or clinician; do not give medicine solely to prevent a reaction unless advised. If chickenpox-like blisters appear, avoid scratching and reduce close contact with people who may be vulnerable until a clinician has assessed them. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or a rapidly worsening reaction after vaccination.
