What should you know about mitral regurgitation heart failure?

The mitral valve sits between the left upper and lower heart chambers. When it does not close fully, blood moves backwards during contraction. The heart may compensate for a time, but ongoing leakage can enlarge or weaken the heart and raise pressure behind it. Heart Failure describes reduced ability to circulate blood effectively; it does not mean the heart has stopped.

Symptoms can include breathlessness, Cough, tiredness, Palpitations or Swollen Ankles. Atrial Fibrillation and Hypertension can coexist with valve disease and may affect the care plan.

Keep cardiology and primary-care appointments so symptoms, heart rhythm, blood pressure and valve function can be reviewed. Take prescribed medicines consistently and record changes in breathing, exercise tolerance, weight, swelling and sleep. Limit salt only as advised, and ask before changing fluid intake or activity.
