Miscarriage with twins at 8 weeks

A Transvaginal Ultrasound may assess both gestational sacs, embryos, heart activity and the location of the pregnancy. Bleeding or cramping does not by itself establish what has happened. The scan may show loss of one pregnancy while the other continues, or it may be too early to confirm the outcome. Repeat imaging or blood tests may be advised.

Contact your maternity or gynaecology service and describe the bleeding, pain, pregnancy dates and any tissue passed. Use pads rather than tampons while bleeding, drink fluids, and follow individual advice about medicines. If a miscarriage is confirmed, ask how waiting, Medical Management of Miscarriage, or Surgical Management of Miscarriage would affect monitoring and follow-up.

Seek urgent care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, marked dizziness, fever, chills, or very heavy bleeding. These signs can indicate blood loss, infection, or an ectopic pregnancy. Emergency symptoms require action even if a previous scan was reassuring.

Ask whether both pregnancies were seen in the uterus, what the scan showed for each, whether repeat testing is needed, how the pregnancy tissue will be managed, and how follow-up will confirm recovery.
