Short answer

After a miscarriage, bleeding and cramps may gradually settle, but follow-up is needed to check recovery and address warning signs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Physical recovery
Bleeding and cramps should be monitored for change.
Testing
Pregnancy hormone levels may take time to fall.
Emotional care
Support is available for grief and mixed feelings.

The days after a miscarriage

Bleeding can continue for a while and may become lighter or change colour as the uterus recovers. Cramping often eases, but persistent or increasing pain needs assessment. Pregnancy hormones do not disappear immediately, so a pregnancy test may remain positive for a period after the loss.

Recovery is physical and emotional. You may feel sadness, anger, relief, numbness or several emotions together. There is no single correct response. A clinician can discuss contraception, future pregnancy planning, medication review and support for grief when you are ready.

Looking after yourself

Rest, drink fluids and use the pain relief recommended for you. Use pads while bleeding and follow advice about sex, swimming, exercise and inserting products. Keep any follow-up appointment; it may involve a pregnancy test, examination or Transvaginal Ultrasound.

If bleeding or tissue has not settled, your clinician may explain waiting, Medical Management of Miscarriage or Surgical Management of Miscarriage. Ask for clear instructions before leaving care and arrange emotional support from someone you trust.

Warning signs after miscarriage

Get urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, fainting, dizziness, fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge or profound weakness. Contact your clinician if bleeding is not easing, pregnancy symptoms persist unexpectedly, or you feel unable to cope safely.

What to ask at follow-up

Ask when bleeding should settle, whether you need a test or scan, which activities to avoid, when sex is safe for you, how to plan another pregnancy, and where to find counselling or bereavement support.

Questions people ask

Can a pregnancy test stay positive after miscarriage?

Yes. Pregnancy hormones can remain for a period, so follow-up instructions matter.

When can I try for pregnancy again?

Timing depends on your health, recovery and preferences; discuss it with your clinician.
