Pregnancy after miscarriage: what to know

Bleeding and cramping usually settle as the pregnancy tissue passes or is removed. A follow-up review may check that the miscarriage is complete and consider symptoms such as ongoing pain, fever, or prolonged bleeding. Emotional recovery may take longer than physical recovery. One miscarriage does not by itself explain why it happened or predict the outcome of a future pregnancy.

Ask when it is medically reasonable to try, which medicines or conditions need review, and whether you should take a pregnancy supplement. If you become pregnant again, contact your maternity service early so your symptoms and concerns can be discussed. A Transvaginal Ultrasound may be used when early assessment is clinically appropriate. If tissue remains after the loss, Medical Management of Miscarriage or Surgical Management of Miscarriage may be discussed.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, or feeling suddenly very unwell. After a miscarriage, these symptoms can signal a complication and should not be delayed while waiting for a future pregnancy.
