Miscarriage at 13 weeks: what to know

Bleeding may be accompanied by lower abdominal pressure, cramps, clots or tissue. Symptoms can begin suddenly or build gradually, and some miscarriages are found during an appointment before noticeable bleeding. These signs can overlap with other pregnancy complications, so they need assessment rather than interpretation at home.

A transvaginal ultrasound helps examine the pregnancy and uterus. The clinician may also review pain, bleeding and previous results to decide whether immediate treatment or follow-up is needed.

Contact your maternity or gynaecology service promptly. Use pads during bleeding, keep fluids nearby and follow the pain-relief instructions provided. If possible, have someone accompany you, particularly when pain or bleeding is increasing.
