Miscarriage after IUD removal: what to know

Bleeding soon after IUD removal can come from the cervix, while bleeding during a pregnancy may have other causes, including miscarriage. A symptom does not identify its cause. Pregnancy with an IUD in place or shortly after removal also warrants prompt clinical advice because pregnancy location and IUD position may matter.

A clinician may check pregnancy hormone levels and arrange a transvaginal ultrasound. The scan can help assess the pregnancy location and development, though an early scan may need repeating. Tell the clinician when the device was removed and whether it came out intact.

Contact a gynaecology or early pregnancy service promptly if you have a positive test with bleeding or pain. Record the bleeding, clots, cramps, and any dizziness. Use pads while bleeding, avoid self-medicating without checking that it is suitable in pregnancy, and follow the plan for repeat testing.

If miscarriage is confirmed, care may involve waiting for natural passage, medicine, or a procedure. Your clinician will consider scan findings, bleeding, infection, and your preferences. Ask about follow-up testing and contraception or future pregnancy planning when you are ready.

Seek emergency help for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked weakness, fever, or bleeding that quickly becomes heavy. These red flags can occur with ectopic pregnancy, infection, or substantial blood loss.

Ask whether the pregnancy is in the uterus, whether you need repeat hormone tests or ultrasound, what happened to the removed device, and which pain or bleeding changes should send you to emergency care.
