What an early scan can show

Pregnancy dating is based on the last menstrual period, ovulation, implantation, and cycle length, so the pregnancy may be earlier than expected. A scan may show a pregnancy sac, but the absence of a yolk sac, embryo, or heartbeat at this stage does not by itself prove pregnancy loss.
