Placed in the uterus, the system releases levonorgestrel at the uterine lining. The lining can become thinner, which may reduce menstrual flow over time. Spotting, irregular bleeding and cramping are possible, particularly after insertion. The device does not prevent sexually transmitted infections.

A clinician may discuss it when contraception or heavy menstrual bleeding is a priority. Fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis, perimenopause and endometrial hyperplasia can change whether it is suitable or what follow-up is needed.
