The MIR MiniSpir is a portable spirometer that measures how much air you breathe out and how quickly you can do so. It is used with spirometry to assess airflow and support evaluation of symptoms such as cough, wheeze or breathlessness.

You breathe through a clean mouthpiece while the device records a forced breath. Results can include the amount exhaled and the speed of airflow. A clinician interprets the pattern alongside your symptoms, examination and medical history; the number on its screen is not a diagnosis by itself. The test can help assess obstructive or restrictive breathing patterns and may be repeated to compare readings under different conditions.

Follow the clinic's instructions about inhalers, meals, smoking and vigorous exercise before testing. Wear clothing that does not restrict your chest. Sit or stand as instructed, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, inhale fully, then blow out hard and steadily for as long as directed. Several attempts are common because technique affects the result. Tell the clinician if you feel dizzy, develop chest pain or cannot complete the manoeuvre.

Spirometry is usually planned rather than an emergency test. Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or chest pain that does not settle.
