What should you know about mini skin tags?

A skin tag, also called an acrochordon, is a small flap or bump of tissue that commonly appears where skin rubs against skin or clothing, such as the neck, underarms, eyelids, or groin. It may match your skin tone or look slightly darker. Size alone cannot confirm the diagnosis: a wart, mole, or another lesion can sometimes look similar. A clinician can examine a new, changing, bleeding, crusted, or unusually firm growth.

Do not cut, tie off, burn, or freeze a tag at home, particularly near the eye or on sensitive skin. Reduce friction with comfortable clothing and avoid picking at a raised area. If it repeatedly snags, becomes sore, or bothers you cosmetically, a dermatologist can discuss removal. Options may include trimming, freezing with cryotherapy, or using electrosurgery; the choice depends on its position, attachment, and appearance.

Arrange a skin assessment if the growth changes quickly, develops uneven colour, bleeds without clear friction, forms a persistent sore, or becomes painful. Seek prompt care for heavy bleeding, spreading redness, warmth, or pus after an attempted removal. A lesion near the eye, genitals, or another delicate area is best assessed before any treatment.
