What should you know about mineral oil for cradle cap?

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, causes greasy or flaky scales on a baby’s scalp. It is usually mild and does not reflect poor hygiene. Mineral oil can loosen attached scale, allowing washing and a soft brush to lift it gradually. It does not treat every cause of a scaly rash, and heavy oil left on the scalp may worsen buildup or irritate some skin.

Use a small amount of plain mineral oil on the affected scalp, leave it briefly to soften the scale, then wash thoroughly with a gentle baby shampoo. Use a soft brush only for loose flakes; never scratch, scrape, or pull attached skin. Keep oil away from the eyes, nose, and mouth, and avoid fragranced blends. If scale persists, ask about Emollient Therapy or whether Topical Antifungal Treatment is appropriate.

Contact a clinician if the scalp is very red, swollen, cracked, wet, bleeding, painful, or has pus or an unpleasant smell. Seek advice when the rash spreads beyond the scalp, the baby seems unwell, or gentle care does not help. Do not use medicated products on an infant unless a clinician has advised the specific product and method.

Ask whether the rash fits cradle cap, which oil or cleanser is suitable, how long it may remain before washing, and whether treatment is needed. Clarify which symptoms suggest infection, eczema, or another diagnosis and when the baby should be rechecked.
