Milk for heartburn during pregnancy

Short answer
Milk may briefly soothe pregnancy heartburn, but it does not reliably treat the underlying reflux and can worsen symptoms for some people.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why milk can feel helpful or unhelpful
Pregnancy hormones can relax the valve between the stomach and food pipe, while the growing uterus can increase pressure on the stomach. A cool drink may temporarily coat or soothe the throat, yet milk also contains fat and protein that may stimulate later acid release. Your response can differ by milk type, amount, and timing. Heartburn is a symptom of reflux; it does not by itself identify a particular condition.
Ways to reduce discomfort
Try small meals, eat slowly, and remain upright after eating rather than lying down soon afterwards. Notice whether rich, spicy, acidic, or caffeinated foods trigger symptoms. If you choose milk, take a small amount and stop if burning, fullness, or regurgitation increases. Raise the head of your sleeping position safely and ask your maternity clinician before using an antacid or other medicine. See [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/) for background on reflux and [Acid Reflux Medication](/treatments/medical-management/acid-reflux-medication/) for treatment discussions.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team if heartburn is frequent, interrupts sleep, makes eating difficult, or does not improve with simple changes. Seek urgent help for chest pressure, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe persistent abdominal pain, or difficulty swallowing. New severe upper abdominal pain with headache, vision changes, or marked swelling also needs prompt pregnancy assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which antacid or reflux medicine is suitable in pregnancy, whether another medicine could be contributing, and how to maintain adequate food and fluid intake when symptoms limit meals.
