Milia pimples on the face: what to know

A milium forms when keratin, a protein found in the outer skin layer, becomes trapped in a small pocket. It often looks white or cream, feels hard, and does not have the inflamed tenderness or open pore typical of many pimples. Milia commonly appear around the eyes, cheeks, nose, or forehead. A cluster of facial bumps can also be another condition, such as acne, folliculitis, or perioral dermatitis, so appearance alone is not enough for a diagnosis.

Milia are usually harmless, but squeezing them can tear the surrounding skin and leave a mark. Their presence does not mean that a person has acne.

Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild, non-scrubbing cleanser. Avoid picking, needles, harsh scrubs, and heavy products that seem to sit on the skin. Do not use acne medication directly beside the eye unless a clinician has advised it.
