Milia and syringoma treatment

Milia are tiny cysts containing trapped keratin. They often appear as smooth white or flesh-coloured bumps. Syringomas arise from sweat-duct cells and commonly form multiple firm, skin-coloured bumps around the lower eyelids, although other sites can be affected. They may look similar at a glance, so a clinician should identify the lesion before treatment.

Neither condition is usually dangerous, but removal can leave temporary redness, pigment change, a small wound or a scar. The thin skin around the eyes needs especially careful planning.

If the bumps are harmless and do not bother you, observation is reasonable. Do not cut, pierce or burn them yourself. For selected milia, a dermatologist may make a tiny opening and release the contents. Syringomas are more deeply connected to the skin, so they can be harder to remove without recurrence or a visible treatment mark.

Depending on the number, depth and location, options may include CO2 Laser Resurfacing or Electrosurgery. A consultation should cover the likely number of sessions, wound care, pigment risk and whether treating every bump is sensible. Sun protection during healing helps reduce colour change.

Book an assessment for a new, changing, bleeding or painful bump, or when several lesions appear suddenly. Seek prompt care for spreading swelling, pus, fever, severe pain or an eye symptom such as blurred vision. Diagnosis is also worthwhile if home products have caused irritation or the bumps persist despite gentle skin care.
