What should you know about milia after microneedling?

Milia are small, firm, pearly or white bumps formed when keratin becomes trapped beneath the skin surface. After microneedling, temporary swelling, occlusive products, or altered shedding during recovery can make tiny bumps more noticeable. Not every post-treatment bump is milia: irritation, follicle inflammation, infection, or a flare of another skin condition can look similar. The timing, texture, redness, tenderness, and distribution help a clinician decide what is happening. Mention every serum, balm, sunscreen, and active product used after the procedure.

Follow the aftercare instructions from the treating provider and keep the area clean with a mild cleanser. Avoid picking, squeezing, scrubbing, home extraction, and strong acids or retinoids until the skin barrier has recovered. Use only recommended moisturiser and sun protection. Contact the provider if bumps persist so they can confirm the diagnosis and, if appropriate, remove milia with a controlled method. Future treatment planning may involve Microneedling, a Microneedling Pen, Fractional Laser Treatment, or RF Microneedling, but a different procedure should wait until the reaction is understood.

Contact the treatment provider promptly for increasing pain, warmth, spreading redness, pus, fever, blistering, or swelling that is worsening rather than settling. Seek urgent care for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or eye symptoms. A few stable white bumps without these features can usually be reviewed in a routine follow-up, but do not self-treat near the eyes.
