What should you know about mild sickle cell disease?

Sickle cell disease changes the shape and flexibility of some red blood cells. This can reduce oxygen delivery and sometimes block small blood vessels, causing anaemia or pain. The word mild describes the pattern or intensity of symptoms, not an absence of risk. Fatigue, pale skin, joint pain, jaundice, or repeated infections can be relevant clues, although symptoms vary between people. A blood test helps confirm the haemoglobin type and guide specialist care.

Drink regularly, avoid overheating and sudden exposure to cold, and take prescribed medicines as directed. Ask your care team what to do during fever, pain, travel, exercise, or reduced fluid intake. Keep vaccinations and routine reviews up to date. Tell every healthcare professional that you have sickle cell disease, and keep a written plan for pain treatment and emergency contacts. If you are planning a pregnancy or marriage, discuss premarital screening and genetic counselling with your clinician.

Seek urgent medical help for fever, chest pain, breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, confusion, severe or unusual pain, marked tiredness, or inability to drink. New severe headache, abdominal swelling, or a very pale appearance also warrants prompt assessment. Do not wait for a symptom to become extreme: infection and reduced oxygen can worsen quickly in sickle cell disease, even when day-to-day symptoms are usually limited.
