Mild ringworm on the scalp: what to know

Scalp ringworm is a fungal infection of the scalp and hair shafts. Early signs can include a round or irregular Skin Rash, itching, broken hairs, temporary patches of hair loss, or flaky Scaly Skin. The edge may be more active than the centre, but a ring shape is not always present.

The infection can spread through close contact or shared combs, hats, pillows, and towels. Children are often affected, but anyone can develop it. Dandruff, eczema, and bacterial inflammation can look similar, so an examination and sometimes a hair or skin sample help guide treatment.

Arrange a clinician review rather than relying on a cream intended for body skin. Scalp infection often needs Oral Antifungal Treatment because medicine must reach the follicles. A medicated shampoo or Topical Antifungal Treatment may be added to reduce surface spores and spread, but it may not replace the main treatment.

Do not share brushes, hats, helmets, towels, or bedding. Wash items that touch the scalp regularly, clean combs as advised, and check close household or sports contacts for itchy scaling or hair changes. Avoid scratching, shaving the area without advice, or applying steroid cream unless prescribed.

Seek prompt medical care if the scalp becomes painful, boggy, swollen, pus-filled, or heavily crusted, or if hair loss is advancing. Fever, tender neck glands, or a child who seems unwell also warrant prompt review. Early treatment can reduce inflammation and the risk of lasting hair damage.
