Mild hydrosalpinx on HSG: what to know

An HSG uses contrast and imaging to look at the shape of the uterus and whether contrast passes through the tubes. A hydrosalpinx can result when inflammation or scarring blocks the far end of a tube, allowing fluid to collect. Mild does not describe your chance of pregnancy by itself. The finding may affect natural conception or fertility treatment decisions, especially if fluid can move back toward the uterus. Some people have pelvic discomfort, unusual discharge, or no symptoms at all.

Arrange a review of the HSG images and report with a gynaecologist or fertility specialist. Ask whether the tube is open at the uterine end, whether the other tube looks healthy, and whether infection or previous pelvic inflammation could explain the change. Treatment may involve observation, treatment of an active infection, surgery such as salpingectomy, or a fertility plan that uses IVF. The right choice depends on symptoms, both tubes, ovarian and sperm factors, and your goals.

After an HSG, seek prompt medical advice for fever, worsening pelvic pain, foul-smelling discharge, heavy bleeding, faintness, or feeling acutely unwell. Outside the procedure, urgent assessment is needed for sudden severe one-sided pelvic pain, vomiting, collapse, or heavy bleeding. Contact your clinician sooner if pelvic pain or discharge persists rather than waiting for a fertility review.

Ask what the HSG shows about each tube, whether the fluid reaches the uterus, whether infection testing is needed, how the finding changes natural conception or IVF planning, and what benefits and drawbacks apply to observation or surgery.
