Mild heart failure symptoms: what to know

Heart failure means the heart is not pumping or filling well enough for the body's needs. Early symptoms may appear during stairs, brisk walking or other effort before becoming noticeable at rest. People may report fatigue, breathlessness, a cough that is worse when lying down, palpitations or swelling around the ankles. Heart failure commonly presents with combinations of these symptoms, but each can also have other causes.

High blood pressure and atrial fibrillation can place strain on the heart or alter its rhythm. A clinician may review your history, examine your heart and lungs, check your pulse and blood pressure, and arrange tests when appropriate.

Book a medical appointment for new or gradually increasing symptoms, especially if your walking distance is falling or shoes feel tighter from swelling. Take prescribed medicines as directed and do not stop them suddenly. Record breathlessness, sleep position, swelling, weight trend if your clinician has recommended monitoring, and any palpitations. Limit strenuous activity until assessed, but keep gentle movement within your comfort.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing up pink or bloody froth, or a rapid worsening of symptoms. Seek same-day advice if breathlessness occurs at rest, you cannot lie flat comfortably, swelling is rapidly increasing or your heartbeat feels persistently irregular.
