What should you know about microneedling with hyaluronic acid before and after?

Before treatment, a clinician should check the area for active acne, eczema, infection, open skin, irritation, and a history of cold sores where relevant. Hyaluronic acid can attract water and is used in products intended to hydrate the skin, but microneedling does not guarantee a particular cosmetic result. The visible change depends on skin condition, needle depth, product, and aftercare.

Immediately afterward, the skin may look red or feel warm, tight, dry, or tender. Small pinpoint marks can occur. These early effects are not the final appearance. Microneedling is also different from a hyaluronic acid injection, which delivers material beneath the skin.

Before the appointment, disclose medicines, allergies, previous procedures, cold-sore history, and products that have irritated you. Arrive with clean skin and follow any clinician-specific instructions about pausing active skincare. After treatment, use gentle cleansing and the recommended bland moisturiser, avoid picking, and protect the area from sun, heat, friction, swimming, and makeup until advised.

Do not add acids, retinoids, fragranced products, or unapproved supplements to the treated area while it is sensitive. Take a clear photo in similar lighting only after the initial redness has eased if you want to compare changes over time.

Ask for medical advice if redness, swelling, warmth, pain, or discharge is worsening, spreading, or not following the expected settling pattern. Blisters may indicate a cold-sore flare. Seek urgent help for severe swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, or intense pain with unusual skin colour.

Ask what product will be used, how the device is sterilised, how long to avoid active skincare, when makeup and exercise are allowed, and how a concerning reaction will be handled.
