Microneedling for keloid scars: before and after

A keloid is a firm scar that extends beyond the original wound and may continue enlarging, itch, feel tender, or darken. Standard microneedling creates controlled punctures to encourage remodeling in selected depressed or uneven scars; that mechanism is different from treating a keloid, which is already overgrown scar tissue. Photographs taken before treatment should show the scar's height, colour, borders, and nearby skin. After any procedure, mild redness or swelling can occur, but a keloid that becomes thicker, more painful, warmer, or rapidly larger needs review.

Arrange an assessment with a dermatologist or clinician experienced in keloid care before booking microneedling. They may discuss options such as silicone, steroid treatment, pressure therapy, or another scar approach based on the scar's location and behaviour. Do not needle a healing wound, an infected area, or a raised scar at home. Follow the agreed aftercare, protect the area from sun while it settles, and avoid picking, exfoliating, or applying unapproved products.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if redness spreads, pain increases, pus appears, fever develops, or the treated area becomes hot. Seek a scar review if the keloid starts extending beyond its previous edge, develops persistent bleeding, or interferes with movement. Urgent care is appropriate for severe swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly worsening allergic reaction.

Ask whether the scar is truly a keloid or another scar type, what treatment could reduce the chance of stimulation, how the result will be photographed and monitored, and which changes should trigger an earlier appointment.
