Microneedling damaged my skin: what to do

Microneedling creates controlled openings in the skin, so stinging, tightness, redness, mild swelling, and flaking may occur while the surface barrier recovers. Irritation can be amplified by strong skincare products, heat, friction, sun exposure, or treating skin that was already inflamed.

A delayed dark or light patch can follow inflammation, particularly in skin that pigments readily. This does not prove permanent injury, but it is a reason to pause further procedures and arrange an examination if the change is pronounced or not improving. Stop additional needling and contact the provider who performed it, describing when symptoms began and which products or medicines you used afterward. Follow gentle cleansing and the aftercare plan they gave you. Avoid picking, scrubs, acids, retinoids, fragranced products, swimming, and intense heat until advised that the barrier has recovered. Use sun protection because ultraviolet exposure can deepen post-inflammatory color change.

Arrange prompt medical review for increasing tenderness, warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, open sores, or clusters of blisters. Seek urgent care for facial swelling affecting breathing or vision, severe pain, or rapidly changing skin. Do not try to conceal a concerning reaction with another cosmetic procedure.

Ask whether the appearance matches barrier irritation, infection, an allergic reaction, or post-inflammatory pigment change; whether any product should be stopped; and when treatment can safely be reconsidered.
