What should you know about microdermabrasion therapy?

Short answer

Microdermabrasion therapy is a superficial exfoliation treatment that removes loosened outer cells with a controlled handpiece.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Depth
Superficial treatment of the outer skin surface.
Possible feel
Light pressure, movement, and suction with temporary sensitivity afterward.
Protection
Moisturiser and sunscreen help support the healing surface.

What therapy involves

During a session, a clinician moves a textured tip or fine crystals over selected skin while suction clears residue. The aim is to refine the surface, not to reach deep tissue. Skin may look brighter or feel smoother, but outcomes depend on the concern being treated and the condition of the skin beforehand. Common short-term effects include mild redness, dryness, tightness, or sensitivity. Therapy is not appropriate for every rash, wound, infection, or inflamed flare.

Before and after treatment

Describe your skin history, tendency to form raised scars, recent sun exposure, active acne or eczema, cold sores, and recent injectables or resurfacing. Follow the clinic’s preparation advice and do not exfoliate irritated skin before an appointment. Afterward, cleanse gently, apply a simple moisturiser, use sunscreen, and avoid picking, vigorous rubbing, heat, and irritating active ingredients while sensitivity lasts. You can compare the equipment on the [Microdermabrasion Device](/technology/microdermabrasion-device/) page and discuss a [Chemical Peel](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/chemical-peel/) if another approach may fit your goal.

When to seek care

Call the clinic if discomfort is escalating instead of easing, or if you develop marked swelling, blisters, broken skin, crusting, or persistent colour change. Pus, fever, spreading warmth, or eye irritation should be assessed promptly rather than managed with extra exfoliation.

What to ask

Ask what concern the therapy can realistically address, which areas should be avoided, how your skin tone and sensitivity affect settings, which products to pause, and when follow-up is needed.

Questions people ask

Does microdermabrasion therapy treat deep scars?

It may improve surface smoothness for some people, but deep or tethered scars need a tailored assessment and may require a different treatment.

How should I care for skin afterward?

Use gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and sun protection, and wait until sensitivity settles before restarting irritating products.
