What should you know about microdermabrasion peeling?

Microdermabrasion may leave skin looking brighter and feeling smoother by removing some outer surface material with a tip or crystals and suction. It does not usually create the same type of visible shedding associated with a chemical peel. A peel relies on ingredients selected for the intended depth, so the experience and recovery can vary by formula and skin condition.

Mild dryness or flaking after exfoliation can happen, but forcefully pulling flakes away can expose tender skin and prolong irritation. Neither approach should be used over an active infection, open wound or severely inflamed rash without medical guidance.

Before either treatment, disclose recent sun exposure, waxing, hair removal, cold sores, acne medicines and products containing retinoids or acids. Follow the clinician's preparation instructions. Afterward, wash gently, apply a plain moisturiser and protect the area from sunlight. Avoid scrubs, picking, fragranced products and unapproved active ingredients until the skin barrier feels settled. Do not schedule different exfoliating treatments close together unless your clinician has planned the sequence.

Seek advice for severe or increasing pain, swelling, blisters, raw areas, spreading redness, pus or a patch that changes colour markedly. Urgent help is appropriate if facial swelling affects breathing or swallowing. Early assessment can help separate ordinary shedding from a chemical injury, allergic reaction or infection.
