Microdermabrasion for dark spots: what to know

Short answer

Microdermabrasion may make some dark spots look lighter by removing superficial built-up skin, but it does not treat every cause of pigmentation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main action
Surface exfoliation with controlled abrasion and suction
Key limitation
Deeper or recurring pigmentation may need another approach
Aftercare priority
Gentle care and consistent sun protection

How it may affect dark spots

A device gently abrades the outermost skin and usually uses suction to lift loosened cells. This can smooth rough texture and make surface discoloration less noticeable. Pigmentation that sits deeper in the skin, returns after sun exposure, or follows acne or irritation may need a different plan. Repeated abrasion can also irritate sensitive skin and deepen discoloration in some people, especially when aftercare and sun protection are neglected.

Preparing for and caring for your skin

Have the area assessed before treatment if a spot is new, changing, bleeding, crusted, or unlike nearby marks. Tell the clinician about retinoids, exfoliating products, recent tanning, active acne, eczema, cold sores, and any tendency to develop dark marks after inflammation. After a session, use the recommended gentle cleanser and moisturizer, avoid picking or scrubbing, and protect exposed skin from sunlight. A clinician may suggest a pigment-focused treatment, such as a Chemical Peel, when microdermabrasion is unlikely to address the pigment source.

When to pause and seek medical advice

Contact the treating clinician if redness, swelling, burning, blistering, or tenderness is worsening rather than settling. Seek prompt dermatology assessment for a dark spot that changes in size, shape, colour, or surface, or one that repeatedly bleeds or forms a persistent crust. Cosmetic exfoliation should not delay examination of a suspicious mark.

Questions to ask

Ask what is causing the pigmentation, whether your skin is prone to post-inflammatory darkening, how many treatments may be considered, and which products should be paused before and after the session. You can also ask how the device will be adjusted for your skin sensitivity and what alternative options are appropriate.

Questions people ask

Can microdermabrasion remove dark spots in one treatment?

It may improve the look of superficial uneven tone, but visible change varies and one session may not address the underlying cause.

Can microdermabrasion worsen pigmentation?

Irritation can trigger darker marks in some skin types, so treatment settings and aftercare should be chosen by a qualified clinician.
