What should you know about a micro spirometer?

Spirometry records airflow and the amount of air moved during a forceful breath. A compact device may be used in a clinic or for repeated monitoring, depending on its design and the clinician’s plan. Results can support assessment of conditions that narrow or change the airways, but a reading is not interpreted alone. Age, height, technique, effort, recent illness, smoking, medicines, and the quality of the test can all affect the result.

Wear clothing that allows your chest to expand and follow the instructions about eating, smoking, exercise, and inhalers before the test. Sit upright, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, breathe in as directed, and blow out hard and for as long as instructed. Several attempts may be needed because technique affects the reading. Tell the clinician about chest pain, dizziness, recent surgery, infection, pregnancy, or medicines so the test can be planned safely. Never change prescribed treatment simply to alter a result.

Breathlessness that is severe, rapidly worsening, or present at rest needs urgent assessment, especially with blue lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or inability to speak comfortably. During testing, tell the clinician immediately if you feel faint, develop chest discomfort, or cannot recover your breathing. A spirometer is for assessment and monitoring; it is not a substitute for emergency treatment.

Ask what the test is checking, whether you should pause any inhaler, how many attempts are expected, and when results will be explained. Ask what symptoms should prompt urgent review and whether repeat spirometry or another breathing test is needed.
