Methionine PET scan: what to know

Methionine is an amino acid used by cells to build proteins. During this test, a small amount of labelled methionine is given, usually through a vein. A PET camera detects where the tracer collects, and the resulting images may be reviewed alongside anatomical imaging. Increased uptake can occur in tumour tissue, but it is not a diagnosis by itself; inflammation and other active tissue can also affect a scan. The result is interpreted with symptoms, examination, earlier scans and pathology.

Preparation and availability vary by centre. Your imaging team will explain eating, drinking, medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding precautions, and how long to allow for injection, uptake and scanning. A PET-CT Scanner may provide additional anatomical detail, while FDG Radiotracer is a different tracer used for other clinical questions.

Tell the department about diabetes, medicines, pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, difficulty lying still or a previous reaction to an injected tracer. Follow the centre’s instructions about food and fluids. Wear comfortable clothing without troublesome metal and bring earlier scans if requested. After the appointment, follow the team’s advice about fluids, activity and contact with others. Ask when and how the report will be shared; the ordering specialist connects the findings with the reason for the scan.

Tell staff immediately if you feel unwell during injection or scanning, develop rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, dizziness or chest discomfort. After leaving, seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting or rapidly worsening swelling. Contact the imaging centre about less urgent concerns or if you cannot follow the preparation instructions.
