What should you know about metastatic lobular carcinoma of the breast?

Lobular carcinoma begins in the milk-producing lobules. Metastatic means cancer cells have travelled to another part of the body. Lobular tumours can grow in a dispersed pattern, so the extent of disease may need more than one form of imaging and careful review of tissue findings.

A biopsy can confirm the diagnosis and provide receptor information that helps guide treatment. Imaging may examine the breast, lymph nodes and other areas suggested by symptoms or clinical findings. Brain metastases are a separate condition that may need specific assessment if neurological symptoms occur.

Your breast cancer team may review mammogram, breast MRI and biopsy findings alongside scans of other body regions. Testing can examine gene expression or the tumour genome when the result could help select or sequence treatment. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is more relevant to selected staging situations; your team will explain whether it applies after spread has been identified.

Treatment decisions consider receptor status, previous treatment, the locations and pace of spread, symptoms, other health conditions and your preferences. Ask for a written plan that explains the purpose of each treatment and how response will be checked.

Seek urgent care for sudden weakness, trouble speaking, a seizure, severe new headache, confusion, severe breathlessness, chest pain or uncontrolled pain. Contact your oncology team promptly for a new neurological symptom, rapidly worsening pain, or a new change that interferes with eating, walking or sleep.
