What should you know about a metanephrine urine test?

Your body makes metanephrines when it breaks down adrenaline-like hormones. A urine test may collect all urine over a set period, or your clinician may request a single sample. The laboratory measures metanephrine and related substances. An elevated result does not by itself prove a tumour or explain every symptom. Stress, illness, strenuous activity, caffeine, tobacco and some medicines can influence results. Your clinician interprets the finding alongside your symptoms, examination and other tests; a borderline result may need confirmation rather than an immediate diagnosis.

Follow the laboratory instructions exactly. For a timed collection, keep the container cool as directed, record each collection, and include the final sample at the stated time. Tell the ordering clinician about every prescription, supplement and non-prescription product before changing anything. Do not stop treatment on your own. Ask whether particular foods, drinks or activities should be limited before collection. If a sample is missed, spilled or stored incorrectly, report it because the test may need repeating.

Arrange prompt medical review for repeated spells of severe headache, sweating, pounding heartbeat, chest discomfort, fainting, breathlessness or very high blood pressure. Seek emergency help for sudden chest pain, collapse, confusion or severe breathing difficulty. A result that needs follow-up is not an emergency by itself, but it should be discussed so the next investigation is clear.
