Short answer

Metamucil contains psyllium, a fibre that absorbs water and can soften stool, but pregnancy use should be discussed with a clinician who knows your health and medicines.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it works

Psyllium is a bulk-forming fibre. In the bowel, it holds water and adds softness and volume, which can make stool easier to pass. It does not act like a stimulant laxative. Constipation is common in pregnancy because hormonal changes can slow bowel movement, and iron supplements may add to the problem. Fibre needs fluid to work properly; taking a dry powder with too little liquid can worsen blockage or cause choking. Gas, bloating or cramps can occur when fibre is increased quickly.

Using it thoughtfully

Check the product directions and ask a pharmacist or maternity clinician about the suitable preparation and amount for you. Mix each dose with the recommended liquid and drink it promptly, then keep fluids steady unless you have been told to restrict them. Increase dietary fibre gradually through foods such as vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains. Gentle movement may also support bowel regularity. Take psyllium away from medicines when advised, because fibre can affect absorption. Do not use it if you have trouble swallowing, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or a suspected bowel blockage without urgent medical advice.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, or blood in the stool. Contact your maternity team if constipation persists despite sensible measures, keeps returning, or began after a medicine change. They can check for dehydration, another bowel condition, or a supplement-related cause and recommend an option appropriate for pregnancy.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether psyllium suits your symptoms, how much fluid you should drink, whether your iron supplement needs review, and which warning signs should prompt same-day assessment.
