What should you know about metabolic seizure?

The brain depends on a steady supply of glucose, oxygen and electrolytes. A sudden disturbance can interfere with electrical signalling and cause staring, loss of awareness, stiffening, jerking or temporary confusion. The trigger may relate to illness, dehydration, kidney or liver problems, medicines, or withdrawal from alcohol.

A seizure does not identify its cause by appearance alone. Clinicians may check glucose, salts, kidney function and other factors while assessing the event and its recovery. Treating the underlying disturbance is part of preventing another episode.

Clear nearby hazards, cushion the head, loosen tight clothing and turn the person onto their side when possible. Do not restrain them, put anything in the mouth, or give food, drink or tablets until they are fully awake. Note when the movements begin and end.

Afterward, stay with the person and arrange urgent medical assessment, especially after a first seizure. Bring information about medicines, alcohol use, diabetes, recent illness and possible missed meals.

Call emergency services if the seizure lasts several minutes, repeats without recovery, causes injury, happens in water, occurs during pregnancy, or the person has breathing difficulty. Emergency assessment is also needed for fever with stiff neck, severe headache or a new neurological change, which can occur with Meningitis.
