What should you know about met positive lung cancer?

MET is a gene and signalling pathway that can influence how cells grow and survive. In some lung cancers, a specific MET alteration can act as a treatment target. The exact alteration matters, so the phrase MET-positive should be interpreted alongside the pathology report and the test used.

Genomic tumour profiling may examine tumour tissue or another sample for changes that guide treatment. MET status does not describe how a person feels, and it does not by itself predict the course of illness. The oncology team combines molecular results with scans, stage, symptoms and general health.

Ask for a copy of the molecular report and ask which MET finding was identified. Confirm whether the result is strong enough to guide a targeted medicine and whether additional testing is needed. Treatment may be an oral targeted therapy or another systemic approach; the choice depends on the full clinical picture.

Keep a record of new cough, breathlessness, pain, tiredness, appetite change or neurological symptoms. Report side effects early, because the team may adjust timing, supportive medicines or the treatment plan. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, coughing blood, chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness, seizure or confusion. Contact the oncology team promptly for fever, dehydration, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, a new rash with swelling, or rapidly worsening symptoms during treatment.
