What should you know about met lung cancer?

When lung cancer spreads, cells may travel through blood or lymph vessels and form deposits elsewhere. The new deposit remains lung cancer in origin, even when it is found in another organ. Possible areas include the brain, bones, liver or adrenal glands, although each person’s pattern is different.

Doctors use scans, tissue results and sometimes genomic tumour profiling to understand the cancer. Symptoms can include cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, fatigue, weight change, headache or a hoarse voice. A symptom alone does not establish the cause; assessment is needed.

Bring a list of medicines, allergies and recent changes in symptoms to appointments. Ask whether testing can identify features that affect treatment selection. Options may include medicines that travel through the body, radiotherapy for a specific area, surgery in selected situations, and palliative care for comfort and function.

Treatment plans are reviewed as the cancer responds or changes. Tell the team about new pain, reduced appetite, sleep problems or emotional distress, because these can be treated alongside the cancer. A lung lobectomy is a surgical option for selected lung tumours, but spread and overall health affect whether it is appropriate.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, coughing blood, crushing chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness, a seizure or new confusion. Contact the cancer team promptly for a new severe headache, rapidly worsening hoarseness, fever during treatment or pain that is not controlled.

Ask: Where has the cancer spread? What tests confirm this? Is genomic profiling suitable? Which treatment aims to control the cancer or a particular symptom? How will response be checked, and who do I call between visits?
