Mesothelioma most often involves the thin tissue around the lungs, called the pleura, but it can affect other body linings. The phrase skin cancer usually refers to cancers that begin in skin cells, so it is not the usual description of mesothelioma. A lump, sore, thickened patch or changing mark may have many causes, including non-cancerous ones. A clinician may examine the area, ask when it appeared, and arrange imaging or a biopsy when needed.
