MSC stands for mesenchymal stem cell. These cells can be obtained from sources such as bone marrow or adipose tissue and prepared for a proposed medical use. Their intended action is usually described as signalling that may alter local inflammation and the behaviour of nearby cells; they are not simply replacement cartilage or a ready-made new tendon.

In orthopedics, MSC approaches have been explored for problems involving joints, cartilage, tendons, and other connective tissues. The label covers different cell sources, processing methods, doses, and delivery techniques, so one clinic's treatment should not be assumed to be equivalent to another's. Evidence and availability also differ by condition and location.

Ask whether standard options such as targeted physiotherapy, activity modification, medication, or surgery are more suitable for your specific problem. A stem-cell injection should not delay care for an injury that needs stabilisation or repair.
