Menstrual cycle after miscarriage

The first period may be heavier, lighter, longer, shorter or more painful than before. Ovulation can happen before that period, so pregnancy is possible during the recovery interval. Pregnancy hormones may also take time to clear, which can make symptoms and home tests difficult to interpret.

The timing varies with how far the pregnancy had progressed and whether the miscarriage completed on its own or needed treatment. Ongoing bleeding does not always represent a new period; retained pregnancy tissue, infection or another problem can cause continued symptoms.

Record bleeding, pain, temperature and any pregnancy-test results. Use the follow-up plan given by your maternity or gynaecology team. A transvaginal ultrasound may be used when symptoms or examination suggest that the womb needs checking. If tissue remains, your clinician can explain medical management of miscarriage or surgical management of miscarriage, including why one option may suit you.

Discuss contraception or trying for another pregnancy before resuming sex if you need individual advice. Rest, fluids and emotional support can help, but they do not replace review of worsening physical symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, chills or offensive-smelling discharge. Contact your care team if bleeding is worsening rather than settling, pain is not controlled, or pregnancy symptoms continue without a clear follow-up plan.

Ask when your follow-up should happen, how to tell healing bleeding from a period, and whether you need an ultrasound. Clarify when sex and exercise are safe, when to test for pregnancy, and what contraception or pre-pregnancy advice applies to you.
