Menopause and non-stop bleeding: when to get help

Hormone changes can make the womb lining shed irregularly before periods stop, but prolonged bleeding can also come from fibroids, polyps, infection, thyroid conditions, medication effects, pregnancy-related causes, or changes in the womb lining. Bleeding after twelve months without a period is considered postmenopausal bleeding. The amount and duration do not reliably identify the cause, so an examination is needed.

Contact a clinician or gynaecology service promptly and describe when the bleeding began, whether it is continuous, how heavy it is, and whether there are clots, pain, fever, dizziness, or bleeding after sex. Keep hydrated and note the products used. Bring a list of medicines, including hormone therapy and blood thinners. Do not delay assessment by changing prescribed treatment without advice.

Seek urgent care if you are soaking through products repeatedly, feel faint, have severe weakness, severe pelvic pain, shortness of breath, or a racing heartbeat. Emergency help is also appropriate if heavy bleeding follows pregnancy or if you cannot safely stand or walk. Even lighter bleeding after a year without periods needs a timely clinical review.

Ask whether you need a blood count, pelvic examination, ultrasound, or sampling of the womb lining. Discuss possible medicine causes, how to monitor blood loss, and which symptoms should send you directly to urgent care.
