Menopause dryness: natural remedies and safe relief

How the structures involved in Menopause differ from normal

Short answer

Menopause dryness may improve with gentle moisturising, adequate lubrication, and avoiding products that irritate sensitive vaginal tissue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Useful distinction
Moisturiser is used regularly; lubricant is used for friction during sex.
Avoid
Perfumed washes, douching, and untested inserted remedies.

Why dryness can happen

As ovarian hormone production changes, the vaginal lining can become thinner, less elastic, and less able to maintain moisture. This may cause burning, itching, soreness, or discomfort during sex. Dryness can also make small areas of irritation more noticeable. It is a presentation of menopause, but it can have other causes, including infection, skin conditions, or medicine effects.

Choose unscented, water-based products for washing and avoid douching, perfumed washes, and deodorant sprays around the vulva. A vaginal moisturiser used regularly is different from a lubricant, which is used during sexual activity.

Comfort measures to try

Use a vaginal moisturiser according to its label and apply lubricant before penetration or any activity that causes friction. Take time for arousal, communicate about discomfort, and stop if pain continues. Loose, breathable underwear and changing out of damp clothing may reduce irritation. Do not insert kitchen oils, herbal preparations, or homemade mixtures: they may irritate tissue or interfere with barrier contraception.

If these measures do not provide enough relief, a clinician can discuss prescription options and check for another cause. Vaginal dryness may occur alongside [Menopause](/conditions/menopause/) symptoms such as [Low Sex Drive](/symptoms/low-sex-drive/).

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review for bleeding after sex, unusual discharge or odour, sores, marked itching, burning when passing urine, repeated urinary symptoms, or pain that persists. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, faintness, or fever. New vaginal symptoms after menopause deserve assessment rather than self-treatment alone.

Questions for your doctor

Could an infection, skin condition, or medicine be contributing to my dryness? Which moisturiser or lubricant suits my symptoms? Would a local prescription treatment be appropriate, and what warning signs should I watch for?
