Menopause and post-nasal drip

Post-nasal drip is the sensation of mucus moving from the nose or sinuses into the throat. Hormone changes around menopause may contribute to dryness of the nose and throat, which can feel like coating, irritation, or a need to clear the throat, but they do not establish the cause. Allergies, a cold, sinus inflammation, smoke, dry air, some medicines, and reflux can produce similar sensations. A blocked nose, sneezing, facial pressure, cough, hoarseness, or sour taste may offer useful clues.

Drink fluids according to your health needs, avoid smoke, and consider a humidifier if indoor air is dry. Saline nasal spray or a gentle saline rinse may ease nasal irritation; use safe water and clean equipment for rinsing. Notice links with dust, seasons, meals, lying down, or new medicines. Do not continue decongestant sprays beyond their instructions, because overuse can worsen congestion. A clinician or pharmacist can help choose treatment for allergies, reflux, or nasal inflammation.

Arrange an assessment if symptoms last, keep returning, disturb sleep, or come with facial pain, fever, wheezing, or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, coughing blood, confusion, or sudden severe illness. Persistent hoarseness, a neck lump, or unexplained weight loss also warrants medical review.
