Menopause and acid reflux: what to know

Short answer
Menopause may coincide with acid reflux symptoms, including burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid, cough or disturbed sleep.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Symptoms may worsen after meals or when lying down.
- Night symptoms
- Reflux can disturb sleep and may cause cough or a sour taste.
Why the symptoms can overlap
Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upwards into the oesophagus. Around menopause, changes in sleep, body composition, eating patterns and other symptoms may make reflux more noticeable, but menopause is not the only possible explanation. Symptoms can include a sour taste, burning, [cough](/symptoms/cough/), hoarseness or [difficulty sleeping](/symptoms/difficulty-sleeping/).
Chest or upper abdominal discomfort has several causes. A clinician may ask when symptoms occur, whether meals or lying down trigger them, and whether you take medicines that can irritate the stomach or relax the lower oesophageal valve. A [hiatus hernia](/conditions/hiatus-hernia/) can also contribute.
Ways to reduce reflux
Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and notice which foods, drinks or late-night habits trigger symptoms. Raising the head end of the bed may help night-time reflux; use a safe, stable arrangement rather than loose pillows. Avoid smoking and ask a pharmacist or doctor about suitable antacid or acid-suppressing treatment.
Arrange assessment if symptoms recur, need frequent non-prescription medicine or affect eating and sleep. More guidance is available on [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/).
When to seek care
Get emergency help for chest tightness with breathlessness, sweating, faintness or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Seek prompt medical assessment for difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting or worsening [abdominal pain](/symptoms/abdominal-pain/). Do not assume chest symptoms are reflux.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, whether another condition such as a hiatus hernia should be considered, which medicines are safe for you, and how long to try lifestyle changes before review.
