Membranous conjunctivitis treatment

Conjunctivitis causes inflammation of the thin surface covering the eye and inner eyelid. A pale or grey layer may form with some bacterial infections, severe inflammation, or other eye conditions. Pulling it away at home can cause bleeding or damage, and a membrane may grow back if its cause is untreated.

Redness, discharge, eyelid swelling, gritty discomfort, and light sensitivity can occur. A clinician may inspect the eye, check vision, and take a sample when infection needs clarification.

Arrange a GP or eye-care consultation promptly. Treatment may involve gentle removal by a trained professional, lubricating drops, or prescription medicine aimed at the identified cause. Antibiotic treatment is useful only when a bacterial cause is suspected or confirmed; it will not treat every form of conjunctivitis. Wash hands, avoid rubbing the eye, do not share towels, and pause contact lenses until advised.

Get urgent eye care for reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, severe pain, a swollen eye, injury, or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer. Urgent assessment is also needed if redness rapidly worsens, discharge is heavy, or a membrane returns after treatment.
