Membrane sweeping for induction of labour

During a sweep, a clinician examines the cervix and, if possible, separates the membranes from its edge. The aim is to encourage the cervix to change and contractions to begin without placing medicine inside the vagina or using an infusion. It is not the same as formal induction, and it does not rupture the waters deliberately.

If labour does not start, or if there is a medical reason to deliver, your team may discuss cervical-ripening medicine, a drip, or another approach. The choice depends on your examination, pregnancy history, baby’s wellbeing and the reason for delivery. For example, pre-eclampsia can require a personalised birth plan.

Before agreeing, ask why induction is being discussed, whether your cervix can be reached, what discomfort or bleeding to expect, and what happens if the sweep has no effect. Ask how your baby will be monitored and when you should return. You may decline, postpone or stop the examination after discussing the alternatives.

Call promptly for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fever, feeling faint or unwell, suspected waters breaking, or reduced baby movements. Seek advice for contractions that become regular or difficult to manage. If you have a condition such as pre-eclampsia, use the urgent contact instructions from your maternity team rather than waiting for a sweep’s effects.
