Membrane sweep: when will labour start?

A sweep separates the membranes near the cervix and may encourage the body’s own labour processes. Its effect depends on whether the cervix is already becoming softer, shorter or more open. Some people notice cramps or contractions afterward; others notice only discharge, or nothing at all. A sweep does not guarantee that labour will begin.

Early contractions can be irregular and may settle before active labour. As labour establishes, contractions usually become longer, stronger and closer together. Your maternity unit can tell you the pattern to use when calling, because advice differs with your pregnancy and any medical concerns.

Rest when you can, drink normally, eat light food if you feel able, and keep your phone, transport plan and maternity notes ready. Time contractions if they become repeated, and pay attention to your baby’s usual movements. A pad can help you observe discharge or fluid. If labour does not begin, ask when your clinician wants to review you and what alternatives are available.

Call your maternity unit for suspected ruptured membranes, heavy bleeding, severe constant pain, fever, or contractions you cannot cope with. Seek urgent advice for reduced or changed baby movements. Contact the unit if you are uncertain whether fluid is amniotic fluid or discharge; do not wait for contractions to become regular if your team has given different instructions.
