What happens during a membrane sweep

Your midwife or doctor explains the reason for the sweep and checks that you agree. You lie in a comfortable position while they examine the cervix through the vagina. If the cervix is reachable, they make a circular movement around its inside edge to separate the membranes from the lower uterus. The sweep does not intentionally break the waters.

The examination may feel like pressure, stretching, or cramping. Its effect depends on cervical readiness and individual circumstances. It may encourage contractions, but it may also produce no immediate change. Your clinician can explain whether a repeat examination or another induction option would be considered.

Ask the clinician to describe each step, agree on a signal to pause, and share any pelvic pain or previous difficult examination. You can withdraw consent at any stage. Afterward, light spotting, mucus, cramps, or irregular tightenings may occur. Keep your maternity contact details nearby and observe your baby’s usual movements and any change in contractions.

Call your maternity unit for heavy bleeding, leaking fluid, fever, severe pain, or contractions that become regular and strong. Seek urgent assessment if your baby is moving less than usual, you feel faint, or you become seriously unwell. Follow your own maternity service instructions if they differ.

Ask whether the cervix can be reached, what sensations are expected, how long the examination should take, what happens if you stop, and which next steps are available if labour does not begin.
