What should you know about membrane sweep 2cm dilated?

During a vaginal examination, the clinician estimates how open and soft the cervix is, as well as its position and the baby’s station. Two centimetres describes one part of that examination. The cervix can change gradually, remain at the same measurement for a time, or open further as labour develops.

A membrane sweep involves passing a gloved finger around the cervix to separate the membranes from the lower uterus when this can be reached safely. It is different from breaking the waters. The experience may be uncomfortable, and light bleeding or cramping can occur afterward.

Follow the maternity team’s advice about activity and monitoring. Use a pad if needed so you can observe bleeding, and note tightening, fluid loss, pain and baby movements. A sweep does not guarantee labour, so keep the agreed plan for review or other induction options.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for heavy bleeding, a continuous trickle or gush of fluid, regular painful contractions, fever, severe abdominal pain or reduced baby movements. Follow your unit’s instructions if your waters may have broken.

Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, difficulty breathing or feeling acutely unwell. Do not wait for contractions to become regular when a red-flag symptom is present.
