Melasma and Microneedling: What to Know

Microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled punctures in the skin. The healing response can improve texture and may help selected topical products reach the outer skin more effectively, but melasma is pigment-sensitive rather than simply a texture problem. Heat, inflammation, picking and strong products may make patches more noticeable. A diagnosis also helps distinguish melasma from Sun-Damaged Skin or another cause of uneven colour.

A dermatologist or qualified clinician should review active rash, infection, cold sores, recent tanning, medicines and your usual pigment routine before treatment. Do not microneedle over inflamed or broken skin. Afterward, use the recommended bland cleanser and moisturiser, avoid rubbing and delay irritating products until the skin barrier has recovered. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade and a hat reduce light-related darkening. A Microneedling Pen must be sterile and used at settings appropriate for your skin.

Your clinician may compare Microneedling with Fractional Laser Treatment or RF Microneedling. These options differ in heat, depth and recovery, so the name of a procedure alone does not predict whether it suits melasma.

Contact the treating clinic if redness, swelling, tenderness or heat is worsening rather than settling, or if you notice pus, blisters, fever or spreading discolouration. Arrange a skin examination for a rapidly changing, bleeding or persistently sore patch; do not assume every dark mark is melasma.
